Class on what is Tango musicality
1 – 2.30 pm Class with Tony and Anita on essential understanding of Tango musicality.
In this class we will aim to identify the different sub styles of tango; vals, milonga and tango. We will invite you to actively listen to Tango Music. Listen to Tango Vals, Milonga and Tango, and to hear that there are several things going on. Identifying the music structure and learning how to improvise and play with movement within that.
Playfulness within the structure of the music and the dance, identify the opportunities and possibilities to improvise.
Also, how to identify the phrasing in the music and use that for stopping and starting your dance with the music and restarting dancing to the music.
Another example; Can we follow a particular instrument for a while, (let’s say Violin), then change to follow the Piano. Or can we, the couple, become our own unique instrument in the music, and create our own phrase or bar of music within the structure, and then come back in appropriately with the orchestra again. Crikey ! We’re asking quite a lot here ! But that is what we have to do to be able to dance Argentine tango socially.
- First of all, how do we start?
- How do we ‘connect’ with our partner?
- How do we start to move?
- How do we navigate the room, and the other dancers?
- What do we do if we run out of room?
Obviously we need to:
- Listen to the music
- ’Listen to’ (feel, watch, be sensitive to) our partner,
- and everyone else around us.
It sounds a lot. But a different way of looking at it is to leave all your other worries, thoughts and pre-occupations aside, and ‘be’ in the moment with your partner in the music.
This afternoon is experimental, and will be inclusive for all levels.
2.30-5pm pm Milonga/ Practilonga with DJ Andy Warner
