This Saturday 21st of June 2025 Tony and Anita are teaching the class before the milonga on musical interpretation or how to translate what you hear in the music into dance movements.
Tango music tends to have lots of layers and the different musical instruments can go solo and or change the role they playing the music. E.g. double bass and lower end of the piano can keep the beat or be percussive and the violins and the singer are carrying the melody. The bandoneon can do both! Also the piano can have melodic interludes as well as keeping the pace.
Class on musical translation
In the class we will give pointers on active listening. Or listening to the music with a particular focus, e.g. looking out for the underlying pulse, or the melody or solos, etc. When you have an idea about how the different instruments sound and what role they could play, then you can listen to the rhythm or what story they are telling you. You can learn to improvise with how to translate different sounds and rhythms by analysing the music briefly, how does it make me feel? How does it make me want to move for myself and, how to does it make me want to move with the person I am dancing with? Remember in tango you always need to dance to the music, whatever part of the music you choose to!!
