To improve your dancing we always recommend that you make a point of listening to tango music whenever you can. Even when you are doing something else, and not particularly paying attention. Even without concentrating on the music, just having it in the background helps ‘acclimatise’ your brain and your feelings to the state of being comfortable and at ease with it.
If you lived in Buenos Aires in 1936 or 1946 you would hear Tango music all over the place, and lots on the radio. Of course they would play other music including classical and North American, but Tango was part of the total environment; ‘it was in the air you breathed’.
At one time Argentina was the second biggest producer of recorded music in the world, behind only the United States. And in those years very many Tango orchestras produced tens of thousands of tango recordings. So there is a lot out there.
Nowadays, out of a large number of radio stations in the Rio de la Plata area including Buenos Aires and Montevideo (Uruguay), only a couple regularly feature tango. Popular culture there has changed, as everywhere. But Tango ‘Afficionados’ (Enthusiasts) all over the world recognise the special, unique and amazing qualities of tango music, songs and dancing. It’s all there, but you just need to make a wee bit of effort to enjoy and take advantage of Tango, and to grow your personal understanding, skills and delight in doing it.
